Each course is worth one full-year credit and is contingent on adequate enrolment. Students are not permitted to register for more than one course.
Classes will take place Monday to Fridays. Field trips will occur during scheduled class time AND outside of class time. A detailed schedule will be available at the time of admission.
Placement Test
In February, applicants to the German Kassel program will be invited to complete an online placement test administered by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto. The placement test is an assessment tool that will help in verifying whether students have the knowledge and skills expected at their language level. For example, a student who has completed a full-year German language course at the 100-level, should know Präsens und Perfekt.
The placement test also acts as a valuable tool for the instructors, helping them identify areas where students may need additional support and they would tailor their instruction accordingly. If you performed well in your German language course at your home university, you do not need to worry. The placement test should not be a surprise, but a review of material you’ve already learned.
Note: Upon request, students may complete the placement test before submitting an application. If you are interested, please contact us at cssg.abroad.wdw@utoronto.ca. Once you complete the placement test, you will know your assigned language level before applying. If the level isn’t you expected, you may choose not to apply and avoid paying the $210 non-refundable application fee. If the placement test results align with your expected language level, you can apply with confidence, knowing that there will be no surprises (E.g. getting placed in a lower level than expected).”
The Department reserves the right to place students in the appropriate course in the series GER200Y0 and GER300Y0.
Courses
GER200Y0-Intermediate German 1
GER200Y0 Intermediate German 1
This course continues the work done in GER100Y1 / GER101H1. It further expands on basic grammar and vocabulary, practice in comprehension, composition, and conversation.
Prerequisite: GER100Y1/ GER101H1 or German placement test, Senior high school German or equivalent. (NB: Students must have reached the A2 language proficiency level to qualify for this course).
If you have taken a German language course at the 100-level (GER100Y0 or its equivalent), you are eligible for the GER200Y0 course.
Each university has different ways of organizing their courses. At U of T, our German language courses are all a year long. Some universities instead of offering a full-year course, they split the 1 full-year language course into 2 half courses with different course codes. As long as by the end of the winter semester (April) you will have the equivalent of a full-year language course, then you are all set.
1 half course + 1 half course= 1 full year course
If you are not sure whether or not you have the correct prerequisites, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
