Accommodation
While in Cape Town, students will stay in double rooms in a vibrant, bustling, and safe neighbourhood at a hotel with modern amenities in the heart of Capetown City Bowl. The area offers an excellent range of restaurants, cafés, and shops (including grocery stores and a pharmacy), all within a 2-minute walking distance. It’s also situated closely to the main attractions of Cape Town. Accommodation includes wifi and breakfast every day of the program. Students will travel by day to the Townships of Cape Town for fieldwork during the second week in Cape Town but will continue to reside at the hotel.
Flight
Students are advised to travel as a group to South Africa. The Summer Abroad office will send a recommended flight itinerary to admitted students. Students traveling on this itinerary will be provided with transfers to and from the airport in Cape Town.
Entry Requirements
All students are responsible for making sure that their necessary travel documents are in order. Information on visitor entry requirements is available from the South African High Commission.
At the time of December 2023, Canadian citizens need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their return date to enter South Africa as a visitor for up to three months. Citizens of other countries may have other requirements. Students should also consult the entry requirements to South Africa detailed on the government of Canada website.
EDIA and South Africa
As you plan your Summer Abroad journey, it is important to take the steps to decide whether this program is the right fit for you, and fits your individual needs related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA). Summer Abroad has put together an online webpage for EDIA resources and information in South Africa, which contains information regarding how to navigate South Africa with your unique lived identities, as well as relevant accessibility information.
Health and safety information: all students admitted to the Summer Abroad program are required to successfully complete an online Safety Abroad Workshop, which will provide information and advice on international health and safety issues. Students are also required to attend the online South Africa Pre-departure Orientation in April (details shared with students after admission).
