Students enrol in the University of Santiago de Compostela courses, but earn a University of Toronto credit (i.e. the U of T course number and grade will be listed on their U of T transcript; See course information below). Each course is worth one full-year credit and is contingent on adequate enrolment.
Students will be placed on the appropriate course after a placement exam. The program adopts a communicative approach with small classes (15 students) where language and culture are learned together. Language courses are divided into two parts. In the morning (9:15-12:45), students receive language and culture instruction. In the early afternoon (1-2), students select a seminar of their interest among those available during the session they attend. Students will receive their textbooks on the first day of classes.

Placement Exam
All Spanish language courses require students to complete an online placement before departure. This exam will be administered by the hosting University. This will ensure that students are enrolled in a level of study appropriate to their knowledge of Spanish. Information about the placement test will be sent to applicants after the Summer Abroad application deadline. In addition to the online test, upon arrival in Santiago, the University of Santiago de Compostela faculty will conduct a full assessment, including an oral exam on the first day of classes to confirm the suitability of students in their assigned levels.
Evaluation of the placement test is done by USC. Every effort will be made to enrol students in the course to which they are best suited, but there is no guarantee that students will gain access to the level required for their U of T program of study.
Assessment
Course content and evaluation techniques are generally determined by the University of Santiago de Compostela instructors, U of T students’ final grade is determined by U of T Department of Spanish and Portuguese to ensure that U of T expectations and standards are applied.
