Travel

There is no group flight for this program; students must make their own travel arrangements. The Summer Abroad Office will provide more information and recommended flights to admitted students.

If you choose to arrive earlier or leave later than the program dates, you will be responsible for arranging your own housing for the extra day(s). Specific dates and some arrangements are subject to confirmation based on availability and scheduling.

Entry Requirements

All students are responsible for ensuring they have the correct travel documents to enter Japan for the duration of the program. Entry requirements may vary depending on your nationality, travel history, and flight itinerary. Requirements can change at any time, so students should verify the latest information well in advance of travel.

Students must consult the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto to determine whether they require a visitor visa, short-stay visa, or other documentation. The Summer Abroad Office cannot advise on visa eligibility or application procedures.

If you require a short-stay visa to enter Japan, you must apply for it in Toronto. The Summer Abroad Office can provide a letter of support only after all program fees have been paid in full, and only for visa applications submitted in Toronto. Letters cannot be issued for applications made outside Canada.

If your flight includes a stopover in another country (even for a few hours), check that country’s visa rules to determine if a transit visa is required.

Processing Time: Apply as early as possible and allow sufficient time for visa processing. Some applications may take several weeks.

Please note: Specific requirements and timelines are subject to change based on government regulations and global circumstances. Students are responsible for all costs and consequences related to incomplete or incorrect documentation.

EDIA and Japan

As you plan your Summer Abroad journey, it is important to take the steps to decide whether this program is the right fit for you, and fits your individual needs related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA). Summer Abroad has put together an online webpage for EDIA resources and information in Japan, which contains information regarding how to navigate South Korea with your unique lived identities, as well as relevant accessibility information.

Health and safety information: all students admitted to the Summer Abroad program are required to successfully complete an online Safety Abroad Workshop, which will provide information and advice on international health and safety issues. Students are also required to attend the online Japan Pre-departure Orientation in April (details shared with students after admission).
