Accommodation and Meals
While in Kassel, students will stay with a German host family, making the program a fully immersive German language learning experience. On weekdays, the host families provide breakfast and dinner, and lunch can be purchased at the university cafeteria. On weekends, the host family provide all meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
During day field trips to Hann. Münden and Berlin, students will stay in youth hostels in shared rooms of four to six students. Breakfast and dinner are provided at the hostels. Students will purchase their own lunch on the day field trips days, although bagged lunches may be provided by the hostel.
Group Flight
No group flight is available for this program; students must make their own travel arrangements. Please note that if you choose to arrive earlier or leave later than the program dates, you will be responsible for arranging your own accommodation for the extra days. After students are admitted to the program, the Summer Abroad Office will connect all participants and if you prefer, you can arrange travel plans with other students in the program.
Entry Requirements
All students are responsible for making sure that their necessary travel documents are in order for them to enter Germany as visitors. Information on the entry requirement is available by visiting the Global Affairs Canada website. Please note that most governments have implemented special entry and exit restrictions and requirements for their territory due to COVID-19.
Information on visitor entry requirements is also available from the Germany Consulate.
NOTE: International students who need to apply for Schengen visa should apply for it in TORONTO. Students can request a letter of support to assist with their visa application by emailing cssg.abroad.wdw@utoronto.ca after admission, following the deposit payment deadline. If your flight plans include a stopover in another country (even if it is just a few hours long), you should also check that country's visa requirements in case you require a transit visa for the stopover.
Health and Safety
Visit COVID-19 Update and Planning for more information.
All students admitted to the Summer Abroad program are required to complete an online Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO), which will provide information and advice on international health and safety issues. Students will also be required to attend a PDO specifically for the Netherlands program (date to be confirmed).
