Germany: Kassel (May-June)

2026 will mark the University of Toronto's first year as the main lead for the Canadian Summer School in Germany (CSSG) program. After 9 years of holding the CSSG reins, Saint Mary's has venerably passed on the baton to U of T. The CSSG program has been running for 52 years (since 1973). This program offers a unique opportunity for students to fully immerse themselves in the German culture and language. 

Classes will take place on Universität Kassel campus. University of Toronto professors and professors from other Canadian universities will be teaching these courses.

In 2026, the Germany: Kassel CSSG program will be offering intermediate language courses.

Kassel located in Northern Hesse in Central Germany and it's known for it's rich cultural heritage, expansive green spaces and vibrant art scene. It is Germany's 4th greenest city and home to the World's first permanent theater building. As you approach Kassel, the iconic Herkules Monumnet can be seen from miles away. Visitors can wonder through the Wilhelmshöhe Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the picturesque18th century garden. Kassel is also home to Grimmwelt Kaseel Museum, which narrates the life story of the fairytale forefathers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Program activities

Students will participate in day field trips to Hann. Münden and Berlin. In addition, the program includes a variety of activities such as Trivia Night, Folk Dance Night, attending a Bundeliga soccer match, and watch a performance by Berlin Symphony Orchestra.
