For Chunhui (Lexie) Huang, the Program Coordinator at the Professional and International Programs, education is more than just textbooks and lectures - it’s about exploring the world and creating transformative experiences. Overseeing a range of programs, including the International and Indigenous Course Modules and Research Excursions Programs, Lexie is passionate about providing students with opportunities to connect their academic pursuits with global perspectives.
Growing up in China, Lexie is delighted to see the return of the Beijing and Hong Kong Summer Abroad programs after a few years and is eager to engage with the China Summer Abroad program.
Lexie’s own journey into international education began during her undergraduate years when she spent a semester at the University of California, Berkeley. That experience was nothing short of life-changing. It was during this time that she not only broadened her academic and cultural perspectives but also met her future life partner. Reflecting on her time abroad, Lexie shares, “There were so many moments when I felt uncertain - doubting my capabilities or being afraid to step out of my comfort zone. But those moments shaped me, and I would tell anyone: don’t let fear hold you back. Whether it’s a summer abroad or any new adventure, the reward is worth the risk.”
Lexie has a deep understanding of the anxiety that can accompany stepping into the unknown, especially for those with no prior international experience. However, she emphasizes that “Psychological research shows that excitement and fear are closely intertwined in the brain, sharing the same physiological reaction. The difference lies in how we interpret it.” For Lexie, reframing fear as excitement was key to embracing new opportunities - a mindset she now encourages students to adopt.
Her academic journey brought her to Canada in 2018, where she pursued a master’s degree at McMaster University. Before joining the Summer Abroad office, she worked with the Enrolment Services and the UTSC Management Co-op office, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise in international experiential opportunities. When she joined the Summer Abroad office, it felt like a natural extension of her passion. “I’ve always wanted to help students like me - those eager to explore an adventure abroad,” Lexie explains.
Among her many rewarding experiences, one stands out: the Summer Abroad Reunion. “It’s an awesome event,” Lexie says. “I’ve seen so many students form lifelong friendships and share invaluable memories. It reminds me why this work is so meaningful.”
