Accommodations
Students will be staying off-site in one of CERN's hostels. Meals are normally purchased at one of the cafeterias on the CERN site and are the responsibility of the student. Students should budget approximately CAD$ 2,800 for meals and various expenses.
Flight
No group flight is available for this program; students must make their own travel arrangements. Please note that if you choose to arrive earlier or leave later than the available dates for the accommodation option you have selected, you will be responsible for arranging your own housing for the extra day(s).
Entry Requirements
All students are responsible for making sure that they have the necessary travel documents to enter Switzerland as visitors. Information on the entry requirements for Switzerland is available by visiting the Global Affairs Canada website. Please note that most governments have implemented special entry and exit restrictions and requirements for their country due to COVID-19.
If your flight plans include a stopover in another country (even if it is just a few hours long), you should also check that country's visa requirements in case you require a transit visa for the stopover.
Information on entry requirements is available from the Consulate of Switzerland in Toronto.
As of the time of publication (December 2023), Canadian citizens do not need a visa for travel for countries within the Schengen area. However, visa-free travel only applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Stays are cumulative and include visits to any Schengen area country. Citizens of other countries may have other requirements.
EDIA and Switzerland
As you plan your Summer Abroad journey, it is important to take the steps to decide whether this program is the right fit for you, and fits your individual needs related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA). Summer Abroad has put together an online webpage for EDIA resources and information in Switzerland which contains information regarding how to navigate Switzerland with your unique lived identities, as well as relevant accessibility information.
Health and safety information: all students admitted to the Summer Abroad program are required to successfully complete an online Safety Abroad Workshop, which will provide information and advice on international health and safety issues. Students are also required to attend an online Pre-departure Orientation (PDO) (details shared with students after admission). Students are also strongly encouraged to attend an in-person program specific PDO (Date to be confirmed).
