Science Abroad - Switzerland (May to August)

Physics in Switzerland

Monday, May 13 to Monday, August 5, 2024 (12 weeks)

Science Abroad allows science students to complete a research course at one of several prestigious research facilities located overseas.  Students will collaborate with colleagues from other countries, and explore problems of a global nature.  Through this experiential learning process, students will have the chance to relate their academic studies to real-world lab situations, while also earning course credit that will count towards their degree requirements.

ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.  CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for research in particle physics. Seven UofT professors are among the scientists conducting research there, leading a group of approximately 30 UofT researchers on ATLAS. The experiment is recreating the conditions at the birth of the Universe and will bring us closer to a more complete understanding of the subatomic structure of our world.

Alumni Reflections: Science Abroad (Switzerland)

In this interview with Anubhav, he shares his experiences participating in the Science Abroad program in Switzerland as an undergraduate student. Now a PhD student at Johns Hopkins University, he reflects on the impact his Science Abroad experience at CERN has had on his academic journey.

Summer Abroad Students probe subatomic university at CERN

For years, a team of over thirty physicists from U of T — including students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty — have been leading members of the groundbreaking ATLAS collaboration. The team includes Pekka Sinervo, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science’s Department of Physics.

During the summer of 2022, two Arts & Science undergraduate students, supervised by Sinervo, had the opportunity to live in Geneva and conduct research at the LHC thanks to U of T’s Summer Abroad program. The program provides students with opportunities to take courses in international locations where they gain invaluable experience.
