As a Master of Global Affairs student at the Munk School, my academic journey has been shaped by invaluable experiences. One transformative chapter unfolded during my undergraduate years when I enrolled in the course "POL300Y0 Contested Boundaries: Immigration, Citizenship and Multiculturalism in Germany and Europe" offered by the Summer Abroad program at the University of Toronto. Little did I know that this course would not only shape my academic perspective but also become a life-changing opportunity. This summer, Summer Abroad program is offering the same course, inviting students to embark on a journey of exploration and understanding. My name is Omer, and having taken this course during my undergrad, I can attest to the profound impact it had on my academic and personal growth.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Germany Summer Abroad course is its small class size, fostering a close-knit community where meaningful connections with classmates and the instructor, Professor Ahmed Allahwala, are forged. The intimate setting allowed me to engage deeply with the material and discuss critical issues surrounding immigration, citizenship, and multiculturalism in Europe.

The highlight of the course is undoubtedly the immersive field trips, where history comes to life. We visited the German Historical Museum, the House of the Wannsee Conference, and the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, and Reconciliation in Berlin. These visits not only complemented our classroom learning but also provided a tangible connection to the complex narratives we were exploring.

What made the experience truly unforgettable was the three-day trip to Brussels and Antwerp in Belgium. In Brussels, we had the incredible opportunity to attend talks at the European Commission, gaining insights into the policymaking processes at the supra-national level. Additionally, our visit to Antwerp included a tour of the migration museum and discussions with individuals actively involved in the resettlement of refugees. These experiences broadened my understanding of the intricate challenges and triumphs associated with immigration on a global scale.

Outside the classroom, I had the chance to explore the vibrant and historical city of Berlin. From sampling diverse cuisines to forming friendships with fellow students, the personal experiences were as enriching as the academic ones. The three days off each week provided ample time for me to travel to various European countries, expanding my cultural horizons and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As I reflect on my own journey, I encourage aspiring students to seize this opportunity. The course not only equips you with a comprehensive understanding of European immigration policies but also offers a unique blend of academic rigor and experiential learning. Whether strolling through Berlin's captivating streets or engaging with policymakers in Brussels, the course transcends traditional classroom boundaries, fostering a holistic and immersive educational experience.

Join me in embracing the transformative power of POL300Y0 this summer. It's not just a course; it's a journey that will reshape your perspective, broaden your horizons, and leave an indelible mark on your academic and personal trajectory.
