I am going into my fourth year this September. I am majoring in political science with minors in French language and philosophy. One thing that may be surprising to learn about me is that I love watching Old Hollywood movies!
Motivation for Joining the Summer Abroad Program
Initially, I wasn't planning to join this year's Summer Abroad program since I had already participated in another course abroad last summer. However, a conversation with a friend from last year's program reminded me of the incredible memories we made. She encouraged me to look into this year's offerings, and I'm so glad she did. My experience this year was exceptional, providing me with extensive academic knowledge and unexpected benefits like exploring various archaeological sites and connecting them to present-day contexts. I also learned a great deal about life from my professor, locals, and new friends, experiencing the beauty of Greece's culture and landscape firsthand.
A Memorable Experience
One particularly memorable experience from my Summer Abroad in Greece was our field trip to the European Bread Museum. This museum taught us all about the religious and cultural significance of bread both within Greece and in various other countries. In fact, the museum has over 3000 items of embroidered bread, including from 50 countries other than Greece. My class learned how each type of bread is used for different events, and the cultural relevance and origin of various bread designs. However, the experience stands out because it had a hands-on component that the other trips lacked. We not only got to touch the displayed bread, but we also got to partake in making our own embroidered bread. Despite my lack of artistic talent, I still had a fantastic time and made some pretty decent simple designs. After they baked, we even got to take home our creations!
Advice for Prospective Summer Abroad Students
My advice for prospective Summer Abroad students is to take advantage of the experience and all the resources at your disposal. Beginning from the University of Toronto itself, apply for all the scholarships and aids you possibly can - look into ones from your college and even your programs. Then, once you arrive at your destination, get out of your comfort zone! Try the local restaurants, markets, and activities. Explore the city you are staying in and don't be afraid to ask your professor or supervisors for advice. Keep an open mind and always be ready to learn! Obviously, do everything in a safe and respectful manner, but it's really important to take full advantage of your experience. Summer abroad is an adventure like no other, providing you with the organization and safe environment to encounter a new culture!
Personal Growth and Development
The Summer Abroad program has contributed to my personal growth and development because it helped me become more confident and independent. During my first Summer Abroad, it was the first time I navigated the airport by myself, and my second abroad experience reinforced everything I learned. I figured out how to budget and plan for meals on my own. However, this independence was not the only thing I gained from this time away from my family and usual friends. I also had the opportunity to make new friends, including my roommates and other classmates, with whom I had to learn to cooperate and coordinate. Speaking of class, the academic aspect of the course contributed to my growth as well. The presentations within class helped me gain confidence and public speaking skills. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, the way the class was structured and the setting outside of the university's typical high-stress environment allowed me to slow down and not feel anxious. I got a greater understanding of the course material and enjoyment of the class because of Summer Abroad and my professor's work to make the classes busy and fulfilling without being stressful.
