N.J.Y. shares their unforgettable Summer Abroad journey in Portugal, where the immersive experience led to unexpected rewards. From overcoming practical obstacles like hot water disruptions to embracing the Portuguese language in daily life, N.J.Y.'s story highlights the transformative power of stepping out of one's comfort zone.

Motivation and Unexpected Rewards
I was motivated to join the Summer Abroad program to earn an extra credit for timely graduation and to learn Portuguese, inspired by my past visits to Macau, a former Portuguese colony near my hometown of Hong Kong.

Through this program, I not only gained experience learning the Portuguese language but also deepened my understanding of its variations between Portugal and Macau. As a history student, I appreciated the opportunity to explore Portuguese culture and history by visiting the city’s historic spots and museums, such as the Combatants Museum. This museum showcases Portugal’s modern military history, from World War I to the Colonial War and 21st-century peacekeeping. The hands-on exploration of these historical sites enriched my learning experience far beyond what is covered in typical university courses.

Fostering Inclusivity Through Cultural Exchange
Interacting with the local community and fellow participants created a more inclusive environment during my Summer Abroad experience. My classmates came from diverse backgrounds, including the United States, Nigeria, China, and other countries. Early on, we spent time discussing our cultural differences and language barriers, such as varying English accents, during breaks. These conversations helped us build mutual understanding and respect for one another’s cultures.

Engaging with the local community was equally transformative. Communicating with locals gave me insight into the cultural and lifestyle differences between visitors and residents. These exchanges not only brought me closer to Portuguese culture but also allowed the locals to gain a better understanding of global perspectives. This mutual learning created a sense of inclusivity and understanding for everyone involved.

Adapting to Different Environments with Practical Solutions
One of the challenges I faced during the Summer Abroad program was dealing with disruptions in the hot water supply at the university residence. On my first day of arrival, I discovered that the hot water in the nearest bathroom wasn’t working. I tried another bathroom on the same floor, only to find the same issue. Eventually, I decided to ask some fellow U of T participants staying on a lower level for permission to use their facilities. Thankfully, they agreed, and I was able to resolve the issue.

This experience taught me that outages and inconveniences are to be expected when living in a dormitory. The most important thing is to remain adaptable and find alternatives. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. In situations like this, our best resource is the willingness to reach out and think of practical solutions.

A Transformative Language Learning Journey
One of the most transformative experiences I had during the program was using the Portuguese language in daily interactions with the local community. From ordering meals in Portuguese to asking about stock availability or prices in supermarkets, I made a conscious effort to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-life situations. Observing signboards also helped me better understand how Portuguese imperatives work.

These experiences were invaluable in building my confidence and deepening my understanding of the course material. By speaking more Portuguese, I became more comfortable using the language and felt a greater connection to the local culture. Transformative experiences like this are essential when learning a new language, as they reinforce classroom learning in meaningful and practical ways.

Final Thoughts
The Summer Abroad program was a truly enriching experience that allowed me to grow academically, culturally, and personally. From overcoming practical challenges to immersing myself in a new language and culture, the journey taught me the importance of adaptability, inclusivity, and hands-on learning. This program will remain a highlight of my academic journey and a cherished memory for years to come.
