Questions to think about when preparing and planning

  • How will participating in the Summer Abroad program align with my personal and professional goals?
  • Which program option or destination aligns with my study or professional interests?
  • How can I balance my academic commitments with my personal and professional responsibilities while studying abroad? Do I have other obligations that may limit my ability to study abroad for a month?
  • What are my expectations for cultural immersion and engagement with the local community, and how will I balance those expectations with my other commitments?
  • What financial considerations or responsibilities do I need to keep in mind?
  • Are there any specific health or medical considerations I need to address before and during my study abroad experience?
  • What type of living accommodation am I comfortable with? What are the available housing options?
  • How are mature students perceived in the host country? What cultural attitudes or stereotypes exist around age and education?
  • Are there support services or a mature student community available at the partner institution to assist my needs and concerns while I am abroad?

Tips to consider while abroad

  • Plan ahead: Consider your work, family, and personal obligations, and make necessary arrangements to manage them during your time abroad to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Budget wisely: Create a detailed budget that covers all anticipated expenses, while considering any financial responsibilities you may have back home and plan accordingly.
  • Maintain communication with your employer: Inform your employer about your plans and discuss any necessary leave or time-off arrangements.
  • Organizing childcare when you are away: With your partner and/or family, discuss what childcare will look like during your time abroad.
  • Embrace the diversity: Be open to interacting and building connections with students of different age groups and different backgrounds. Value the opportunity to learn from their perspectives and share your own unique experiences. Be ready to embrace cultural differences, including local customs and traditions in the host country.
  • Stay connected with your support network: Maintain regular communication with your friends, family, and support network at home and make necessary arrangements to fulfill your responsibilities while abroad. Share your updates of your trip, talk to your network when facing feelings of isolation, homesickness, or culture shock.
