Student Testimonial: Lea (South Korea)
Lea's Bio: Lea is a second-year Rotman Commerce student specializing in Finance and Economics. Originally from China, she spent seven years studying in Singapore before joining the University of Toronto. Her international exposure from a young age has shaped her passion for travel and exploring different cultures.
Lea shared her experience taking MGT395 through the South Korea Summer Abroad program. From learning about business models across industries to seeing textbook examples and picture perfect scenes usually found on social media during field trips, the program provided practical real-life lessons and unforgettable memories. Lea is deeply grateful for this opportunity as she continues her Commerce journey. Read her testimonial below to discover what it’s like to study abroad in South Korea.
What initially drew you to the MGT395 course in South Korea specifically, over other Summer Abroad options or MGT courses?
I picked MGT395 because it was the perfect mix of what I needed and what I love! As a Rotman Commerce student, I wanted a course that counted toward my International Business focus. In addition, I’ve always wanted to visit South Korea as I’m very interested in its music and food culture. Covid kept me from going before, so when I saw this program, I thought this is my chance to learn global business and experience a country I’ve always wanted to explore, so I applied right away.
How do you think participating in this program has influenced your understanding of global business modelling as a discipline?
The best part is being able to see things in person. Reading about South Korea’s history and economic growth in books or articles is nothing compared to seeing it in in real life front of your eyes. Visiting companies and cultural sites during fieldtrips made global business models feel more relevant, I could see how strategies evolved and adapted over time. It connected theory to practice in a way that no classroom could.
What advice would you give to a student who is planning to go to South Korea for the first time?
Go with curiosity and an open mind! Dive into the culture, try local food, and explore beyond the classroom. Don’t hesitate to meet new people because every interaction can teach you something unique. This is your chance to experience South Korea fully, so embrace every moment!
Is there anything you wish you had known before embarking on this program?
I wish I had known how fast paced the experience would be! From cultural activities like fieldtrips to academic projects, every day is packed with learning. Planning ahead for good time management and being ready to adapt quickly will help you make the most out of your experience.
Would you tell your best friend to apply to this program next year? What would you say to them?
Of course! I’d tell them this program is a rare opportunity to learn global business in a fun and hands-on way while exploring South Korea. The friendships, fieldtrips, and projects create unforgettable memories. It’s challenging, exciting, and rewarding, you’ll come back with skills and experiences you’ll never regret.
